She was born June 7, 1943 Knoxville, Tennessee. Her original name is Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr. She studied at Fist University in Nashville. In 1967 she received her degree in arts. She gave birth to her only child in 1969. She named her only child Thomas Watson Giovanni. She's an African American poet. She has published over 2 dozen books of poetry and children's books. She was also apart of the Civil Rights Movement and wrote poems like Black Feeling, Black Talk and Black Judgment. She currently teaches at Virginia Tech
